Azraq Wetland Reserve

The Azraq Wetland Reserve is a unique oasis in the heart of Jordan's eastern desert that once covered over 12,000 square kilometers. Although significantly reduced in size due to water extraction for growing cities, conservation efforts have restored parts of this vital ecosystem. The reserve is an important stopover for migratory birds traveling between Africa and Europe, with over 300 species recorded. Visitors can explore the marshland on raised walkways, observe birds from hides, and learn about the ongoing restoration work. The nearby Azraq Castle and the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve make this area worth a full day trip from Amman, offering a completely different experience from Jordan's more famous attractions.
